Five Things We Love About Recovery Café Longmont

This post was originally published April 30, 2024 on www.recoverycafelongmont.org by Liv Herring

Recovery Café Longmont opened five years ago when CENTRALongmont Presbyterian Church leadership became aware of the need for a place where individuals in recovery from various challenges could find support, acceptance, and radical hospitality. This led them to the Recovery Café Network, which partners with individuals who feel called to establish a Recovery Café in their own communities.

This month, we are celebrating five years of walking alongside members as they discover ways to manage their mental and physical health, maintain sobriety, and build community; the hard work of our members, volunteers, and staff have created a flourishing and ever-growing community of refuge, and we could not be more proud!

As we take time to reflect on and appreciate all we have accomplished since 2019, we know none of it would be possible without our community – so we took this opportunity to ask, “What do you love about Recovery Café Longmont?

While almost everyone’s list included the people, resources, and the delicious meals provided by our Café Cooks, other answers highlighted the individual impact of the Café, reminding us of the importance of our mission: to be a community of refuge and healing for people in recovery.

  1. “Connection to ourselves, and others,” – José, Volunteer
  2. “Sharing my successes, goals, and challenges with others in Recovery Circles,” – Elyssa, Volunteer Coordinator
  3. “Being open and available,” – Kyle, Member
  4. “It can be a quiet and safe space for anyone who needs it,” – Lisa, Volunteer
  5. “Creativity and individuality are encouraged and nourished,” – Liv, Communication + Development Specialist

With so many things to love about the community we have created, focusing in on one aspect is difficult; but over the last five years, we have made a space where everyone is accepted and given the opportunity to grow, and nothing is more important than that.
